Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi
Travelling long haul alone with children can feel intimidating but this journey proved it can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. I travelled with my two children aged four and eleven on my own and together we explored Sri Lanka followed by a sunshine stop in Abu Dhabi. It was a trip full of adventure, culture, relaxation and unforgettable memories.
Sri Lanka Family Adventure
Sri Lanka completely captured our hearts. It is vibrant, welcoming, affordable and filled with experiences that feel truly special. From the moment we arrived everything felt easy and safe which is exactly what you want when travelling solo with children.
One of the best decisions I made was booking a private driver and guide for our entire stay. This included all transfers and excursions and cost just six hundred and fifty pounds. The service was outstanding and it meant we could simply enjoy every moment without worrying about logistics.
One of our most magical experiences was the scenic train journey from Kandy to Ella. The views were breathtaking with rolling tea plantations, misty hills and waterfalls along the way. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world and it absolutely lived up to that reputation. Watching the children’s excitement as the landscapes changed outside the window was priceless.
Our safari was another unforgettable highlight. Seeing elephants in the wild was incredible and watching my children’s faces light up each time they spotted an animal is something I will never forget. It felt like stepping inside a nature documentary.
We also explored waterfalls, visited temples and enjoyed a peaceful river safari surrounded by stunning scenery. Every day brought something new and inspiring. One of my favourite experiences was taking part in a cooking class with a local family. We learned traditional recipes, laughed together and shared stories. Moments like that are what make travel meaningful because they connect you to the culture in a genuine way.
The people of Sri Lanka made the trip even more special. Everyone we met was kind, friendly and welcoming especially towards children. We felt completely safe everywhere we went which made travelling alone with kids feel comfortable and relaxed.
Another huge plus is how affordable Sri Lanka is. Food, transport and experiences are all excellent value which means you can enjoy incredible adventures without spending a fortune.
Abu Dhabi Stopover with Kids
On the way home we stopped in Abu Dhabi which is one of my favourite destinations for families. It offers the perfect mix of sunshine, luxury and entertainment.
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Yas Island which was fantastic. The location was ideal, the hotel was family friendly and it made a great base for exploring.
We spent our time enjoying the warm weather, relaxing by the beach and visiting world class attractions. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi was brilliant for children with interactive exhibits and fascinating marine life. Warner Bros World was also a huge hit. Walking through themed lands filled with familiar characters felt like stepping into a cartoon and both children absolutely loved it.
Abu Dhabi is a destination that manages to be both exciting and relaxing at the same time which is perfect when travelling with children of different ages.
Final Thoughts
This trip was proof that travelling solo with children is not only possible but incredibly rewarding. Sri Lanka gave us adventure, culture and unforgettable experiences. Abu Dhabi gave us sunshine, fun and relaxation. Together they created the perfect twin centre holiday.
Travel is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children. They may not remember every toy they ever owned but they will remember elephants in the wild, cooking with local families and discovering new places with you by their side.
If you have ever wondered whether you should take that trip with your children, this is your reminder to go for it. The memories you make together will last a lifetime.
